What you do after posting?

June 29th, 2007 by Mohd. Hashim Khan

Just like this post itself, if you are a blogger what you do after posting an article in your blog? Here is a list of things which I do (and will be doing after posting this one) if you also do many be prove very useful for your blog.

ping service

1. Ping
Pinging a blog link and its feed URL makes your newer post appear in many other blogs and sites which can give you some good blog visitors. I use Pingoat for this purpose. All you have to do is enter your website and feeds (optional) URL and push a button to ping to various other services.

Social bookmarkings

2. Socialise
Digg it, Slashdot it, make it delicious and do as much social bookmarking as possible. It’s surely providing a good traffic, after all what’s the use of posting when no one reads it?

search other blogs

3. Search other blogs
Do a google search to find blogs (which allow comment) for similar article that you have just posted. Comment on other blogs and post the link to your new article (only if it’s relevant, otherwise it will look like spam). This will again give you some visitors and if not a good blog reader, you should definitely get some hits at least.

statcounter

4. Look for stats (Optional)
I can sometime become excited and what to see the result of how’s my article doing right after publishing it. Look at your blog stats by using a service like Statcounter which provides instant website traffic data. You can spend hours playing with this site and cheer at your blog progress.

Best 22inch LCD monitor

June 27th, 2007 by Mohd. Hashim Khan

LG Flatron LCD monitor

You have spend a lot on your system for best graphics card, more RAM and goodies but what about that monitor at which you have to constantly stare when working on computer ! A typical user today has 17inch monitor which should be ok if you don’t do multitasking. With the coming of dual core processors, people can now easily do two three works at a time on PC for e.g., I often open several applications like photoshop, calculator, and many other window to do work faster but switching to one of these window sometimes becomes a problem due to space shortage. A wide 22inch monitor can do a lot good to your working environment as it will provide enough space for multiple windows and work on each easily. LG Flatron L226WTQ-BF is one of the best available in the market today. Well how can I say that? As you already know the problem with LCD technology was the slow pixel response as compared to CRT which led to blurry images in fast moving games and movie scenes. LG Flatron 22” monitor has a Pixel response time of just 2ms as compared to 5 or even more of others. Hence images are crisp and clear. Colors are also very well reproduced in this monitor. With the price tag of just $350, this is the best buy in 22” LCD monitors range.

Technical Specifications:
• 1680 x 1050 Resolution
• 3,000:1 Contrast Ratio
• Certified for Windows Vista™
• 2ms Ultra-Fast Response Time
• FLATRON f-Engine™
• 300 cd/m2 High Brightness
• DVI Input with HDCP

Price:
$350 Street.

Spyware Terminator

June 25th, 2007 by Mohd. Hashim Khan

spyware terminator
New free antispyware software is here and it claims to be the terminator! It looks similar to Ad-aware and its scan results are very much similar to it, but Spyware Terminator has functions like Real time protection which Ad-aware doesn’t offer in free version. We tested it in three system already loaded with nod32 antivirus and WindowsXp SP2 with all the latest updates.During the install it offered a web security guard
which is actually like a toolbar working real time preventing you from entering a potentially dangerous website, which is quite a good as mostly these spywares get installed at once as you enter such malicious websites. If you feel like you have got a hell good software, all your expectations break when you see the next screen, it ask to install Crawler Toolbar, a search engine (found safe) and also ask your permission to make it the default search engine and your home page!
This looks malicious but since you can reject these during install, I moved to next screen. You will be surprised (and can laugh) to see it now giving an antivirus package too!
  antispyware software

Here we rejected it too as the main purpose was to test the antispyware, not antivirus. At last the installation is finished and I got a really nice looking software on my screen, updated it and it was a breeze. Before I began to do scan I found that the toolbar is actually installed since I selected the web security guard, I hate these toolbars as it’s a useless waste of productive space on computer. You can turn it off though but the question is when I don’t want it why it gets installed? It can be justified because the company offering software for free wants some favor in return like donation etc and in this case they want to popularize their search engine. First quick scan didn’t detect anything harmful, so was the full scan result. Unlike other antispyware this one is made more like an antivirus programs, for e.g., you can scan any particular file from right click menu which is useful in case one find a file looking suspicious, he can scan it immediately. A good thing that I found that being a graphic rich eye candy looking software with lots of features; it consumes very less memory as is not heavy on system at all.
Pros: Nice interface, Real time protection and lots of other features.
Cons: Threats detection rate is that good.

Verdict:
People may uninstall each and every other antispyware they have and use this one but geeks may still stick to good old Spybot.

Web forms made easy

June 21st, 2007 by Mohd. Hashim Khan

jotform - web form

I can remember those early days of my web designing when I just started experimenting on how to make websites. Those days my knowledge was limited and the most important thing I wanted to add to my site was a contact us form. At that time I was not familiar with php and cms etc. When I learned somehow about adding a simple form, I discovered that it was not working because the hosting which I was using being a free hosting was not giving sendmail facility. Few days back I came to know about JotForm which is the first online form generator site. Based on AJAX the whole website looks like a software running inside browser window! It’s slick interface enables anyone to create a custom form of any type for his/her website and even host it on its server, after the form is created, it provides the html code which can be easily added to web page using any html editor. Even advanced function like captcha, payment processor can also be added. Since the form is hosted on jotform’s own server, you can use this service for website hosted on free hosting as well. So what’s the catch? The catch is simple and necessary that they put a limit of 100 emails per month, it’s necessary because without any limit, the service is prone to get abused. Overall this service is best for personal sites or small (very small indeed) business sites. They have premium service also which does not have any limit.

Choosing the right PSU

June 14th, 2007 by Mohd. Hashim Khan

Power Supply Unit or PSU is a very crucial part of your computer, you can call the heart of your computer providing blood (read power) to all the components. Many PC builders in order to reduce cost use cheap unbranded PSU’s which later causes bigger problem like hardware failure etc. So here are some points to remember while purchasing a PSU for your computer.

1. Look for a branded model. Its not necesary that insanely priced brands will be best for you. You can very well relay on well priced cheaper models from brands like Corsair, Coolermaster, Antec, fsp group, etc.

2. When you have chosen some of them and want to find best one, how about weighing them? Yes its true that heavier the PSU’s, better it will be. Well built PSU’s have more components, heavier heatsink and large capacitors making it little heavy but very reliable too.

3. Ok so you sorted out the heaviest one, what next? look at its exhaust fan and intake fan (intake fan may or may not be there, as it depends on model to model
but if its there, its better),its diameter should be as big as possible since huge fan will need less RPM to throw hot air out thereby reducing the noice caused by it. Smaller ones sound like a jet engine and even don’t work well despite of their high speed. A relatively slow but bigger fan will perform better.

4. You must have seen lots of unused wires inside your computer emerging from PSU causing lots of trouble in servicing and working as a barrier in smooth air flow inside cabinet. To reduce this wire clutter now some brands use modular connectors so that you can remove those power cables which are not in use. This is a very good feature as more cables can be connected when needed so you never fall short of them.

5. What about wattage? For normal PC a 350W is more than enough, however if you have recently added a heavy graphic card and a fatter hard disk then you need a 500W monster. The thumb rule here is, the more the number of devices connected to motherboard, the higer wattage you need.
