3 Tips for a First-Time Boat Owner

boatparts-smlMaybe you’re looking at boats. Maybe you’ve already purchased one, but you’re not quite sure what to do with it. Here are just a few tips for anyone who wants to spend more time on the water.

1. Think About Maintenance

This is one of the most important things about owning a boat. How often will it need to be cleaned? How often will it need to be fixed? How many parts will wear down over time, and how much will they cost to replace? Boat parts can range from “very affordable” to “downright expensive,” so it’s in your best interest to do some research on your particular vessel and what it requires. If replacing the motor in five years will cost more than the boat itself, you might want to choose another model.

2. Know What You Need

Speaking of models, you should pay attention to the specifics of your boat. Adhering to things like weight limits can have a big impact on the longevity of your vessel. It’s also worth noting what kind of exterior finish is coated on the sides and bottom; saltwater can stain faster than fresh water, so if you’re spending a lot of time in the ocean, you might want to re-coat your boat in something that will withstand the waves.

3. Compare and Contrast Everything

Don’t ever buy boats or boat supplies without checking everywhere for the best deal. Even if you wind up coming back to that first manufacturer, you’ll feel so much better about your purchase if you know that you’re making a smart and well-informed purchase decision. If you don’t compare and contrast, you’ll always wonder if you could’ve gotten a better price elsewhere.

If you’re ready to make a splash on the water, these are just a few tips to get you started as a boat owner. Keep in mind, however, that these suggestions are only skimming the surface of the pond. There are a lot of things that you’ll only pick up once you’re sailing away, so get moving! That glittering lake is waiting for you!
