Toshiba Boosts Hard Drive Density

Toshiba Corporation announced a prototype hard disk drive that uses Discrete Track Recording (DTR) technology to boost capacity to a record-breaking 120 gigabytes (GB) on a single 1.8 inch platter. This is the first drive in the world to use DTR technology, a breakthrough technology that boost the areal density of a perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) by a full 50 percent.

Toshiba’s latest 1.8-inch HDD in the market offers a single platter capacity of 80GB; application of DTR technology boosts platter capacity to 120GB, and takes the recording density to 516 megabits per square millimeter (333gigabits per square inch). A servo pattern for tracking control is also formed on the disk. Being small, these types of HDD will be good for use in notebook PCs, portable media players and digital movie cameras etc.

DIY Optical mouse repair

Today I wanted to post something different, since many days there was no post on DIY topic so decided to give you all a nice tip on repairing your old optical mouse and make it like new once again. My friend Waseem had a Logitech Optical USB mouse which was about 5 years old and its left click button was not responding. This is mostly the problem will all mouse that after some time the button inside the mouse fail to work effectively. What we did here that we took a cheap mouse lying around in junk and took out two buttons (left and right click) from it.

You can easily do it using a soldering iron. I used a traditional 35W soldering iron which I am having since my school days. Here I want to point out that it’s not necessary that all brands will have same type of switch, so make sure you find an identical one. It will also be a good idea to wash the plastic parts of the mouse with soap and water and give it a shiny new and clean the PCB using pure petrol after you have completed the soldering job. Clean only the soldering side of the PCB using a paint brush.

After soldering the new buttons to Logitech mouse, assemble the PCB with wheel mechanism back to the mouse and put the cover back. Connect the mouse and it should work now!

Keeping Your PC Cool, Quiet, and Stable

building better pc

Recently I noticed that my new PC was running hot and unstable, almost all the components like CPU, motherboard and Hard disk. I always install two chassis fan so bad air circulation was not the problem. Later I realized that the power supply I was using was not of good quality and it was the culprit behind rise in temperature. I then ordered a 500W Amico power supply and I see a great difference in both performance and temperature after changing the power supply. Now all the components run at much lower temperature and very stable. My Athlon X2 now runs at 25°C! This is far better than 38°C with cheap power supply. The conclusion is, never use the power supply which comes with the cabinet as they are very poor in performance and if they have some substandard components inside then it’s like giving slow poison to your PC. I have summed up what you need to remember when building a new PC:

1. Buy a good quality power supply.
2. Install an exhaust fan.
3. Don’t forget an intake fan. Do some case modding or even change the case but intake fan is a must. Don’t ignore it.
4. Tie up all the unused wires of power supply as they can obstruct air flow or even get into CPU fan blades and cause damage.

ASUS Triton series CPU cooler

asus cpu cooler

ASUS introduced its CPU coolers ‘Triton 70’ and ‘Triton 75’, which features easy installation.

The company’s first fan-less model, it is compatible to all 12cm fans in the market allowing users to freely choose any 12cm fan to suit their requirements. With its push pins and clips which were specially designed by the company, you can fasten the cooler easier and it can also be easily installed by utilizing only 2 simple steps without removing the motherboard from the system.

It adopted pure copper heat pipes that deliver efficient heat dissipation for the latest quad-core processors. With their lightweight and compact cooler sizes, the Triton series is compatible with a wide range of motherboards and chassis.

The Triton series supports Intel Core 2 Quad / Core 2 Duo, Intel Pentium processor family, Intel Pentium 4 HT/Celeron D CPUs, as well as AMD’s Socket AM2/940/939, AthlonTM 64-FX, AthlonTM and SempronTM processors.

ASUS liquid cooled motherboards

asus gamer motherboard

ASUSTek Computer launched its ROG(Republic Of Gamers) series motherboards ‘Biltz Extreme/ Blitz Formula’.

Equipped with the company’s Crosslinx technology for increased performance of dual graphic, it utilizes Fusion Block system, a 0dB fanless design cooling system with a chipset waterblock that adds onto a power user’s existing water-cooling circuit to help keep operations cool and quiet.

The Crosslinx eliminates the graphics data bottleneck found in other x16, x4 solutions. The result is unmatched graphics performance for smoother game play and maximum benchmark potential, the company explained. Also, the Fusion Block system is a hybrid thermal design that combines the ROG´s heat pipe design with the additional ability to connect to a water cooling system. All solid capacitor design adds to motherboard performance and life.
