Chinese military hacked into a Pentagon computer network in June in the most successful cyber attack on the US defense department. The Pentagon acknowledged shutting down part of a computer system serving the office of Robert Gates, defense secretary, but declined to say who it believed was behind the attack. One senior US official said the Pentagon had pinpointed the exact origins of the attack. Another person familiar with the event said there was a “very high level of confidence…trending towards total certainty” that the PLA was responsible. Hackers from numerous locations in China spent several months probing the Pentagon system before overcoming its defenses, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Pentagon took down the network for more than a week while the attacks continued, and is to conduct a comprehensive diagnosis. “These are multiple wake-up calls stirring us to levels of more aggressive vigilance,” said Richard Lawless, the Pentagon’s top Asia official at the time of the attacks. The Pentagon is still investigating how much data was downloaded, but one person with knowledge of the attack said most of the information was probably “unclassified”. He said the event had forced officials to reconsider the kind of information they send over unsecured e-mail systems.

Samsung 42-inch PDP TV is causing enormous complaints from consumers in Korea market. In just two months, over six hundreds cases involving Samsung 42-inch PDP TV sold between year 2005 and year 2006. Most of the complaints are with the screen; black or blue lines appear and hide half of the screen or subtitles are not stable. Industry experts say that the problems may be related to panel. Korea Consumer Agency, a governmental organization established to protect consumer rights and interests, announced that regarding Samsung’s four 42-inch PDP TV models (‘SPD-42S5HD’ ‘SPD-42S5HDM’ ‘SPD-42P5HD’ ‘SPD-42P5HDM’) they officially requested Samsung to recall them and repair them at no charge due to some product defects. An official of Samsung Electronics said that they are considering offering extended warranty of two years and now they are waiting for the agreement of industry affiliates and Ministry of Finance and Economy. However, extending warranty period instead of solving original product defect may increase the burden of extended warranty and cost to other players in the industry.

The first global e-sports league for massively multiplayer online games kicked off with the European match start.

GNGWC (Game&Game World Championship, www.gngwc.com), is an international game competition which began in 2006 by Korea IT Industry Promotion Agency (KIPA) in order to promote Korean online games throughout the World.

Last year, 1,070,000 gamers from 5 regions including Korea, Europe, Southeast Asia, Japan, and America took participation in this competition of three official games. Compared to last year’s event, the number of GNGWC 2007 official games is expanded to six games, which are “Shot Online(shotonline.gamescampus.com)” from On-Net, “Bomb ‘n Dash (www.bombndash.com)” from Innodis, “Silkroad Online(www.silkroadonline.net)” from Joymax, “Record of Lunia War(global.lunia.com)” from allm, “Navy Field (www.navyfiled.com)” from SDEnternet, “Warrock(www.warrock.net)” from Dream execution.

This year’s competition will begin with European preliminary round started in August, followed by America and East Pacific Asia in September, and Japan in October. The final winners of each country will be selected to participate in the grand final held on December 1st in Seoul, Korea, and digital camera, MP3 player, and DVD player are provided to 2nd, 3rd winners of each regional match. Furthermore, the 1st place of the grand final will be awarded 5,000(USD), and 3,000(USD) for the 2nd place, and 1,000(USD) for the 3rd place. In addition, Korean tour program is prepared during this grand final period too, KIPA said.

“Any gamers who are interested in this e-sports league can participate now,” said the representative of KIPA, the host of this game event. “Record of Lunia War and Bomb ‘n Dash are quite new games, and you have more chances to be invited to the grand final even you start the game now”, he added.

Recently Nokia released information on their website that some batteries of model BL-5C may explode which are manufactured by Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. Ltd. of Japan between December 2005 and November 2006. You can get your battery replaced if it is manufactured under same period and to check the same you can do it here
Mine was detected as unsafe and there was a short form to fill on the site and Nokia promised to send me a replacement battery and instructions on how to dispose the current one.
