CRT monitor repair DIY Part -2

pcb

Yesterday we took out the PCB and today we will look at it for problems. The problem in our monitor was showing of random color tint and to solve this problem, re-soldering all the components was enough. So I will recommend anyone to first check for dry solder joints. If any of the main color like Red, Green or Blue is permanently missing then you need to replace the base (big white thing with lots of wholes) with a new one. If there is still any problem then driver IC (with heat sink) may also need replacement.

fixing problem

Time to do some work! Switch off all the fan and AC so that solder becomes quit hot for re-soldering job. Use flux (soldering paste) if required. I use it every time as we don’t get very good quality soldering wires easily here. After the re-soldering job, it’s good to clean the solder side of the PCB using old toothbrush and pure petrol (no addictive / oil mixed).

soldering

After doing re-soldering job, it’s time to put everything back. Place the PCB on the picture tube socket and plug all the wires that were attached to it. Solder the ground wires and put the protective casing back. Once again look at everything and make sure that wires are soldered to their respective points. Put the cover back, connect the monitor to computer and switch it on. As predicted, the problem was solved in our monitor and it was working perfect!

monitor color

Some people will ask that why we did all this and why not just junked this old 15” monitor which is not even a standard now and purchased a TFT? Answer is to save earth! Yes, throwing electronics items and if it was not disposed off properly is hazardous as it causes lead poisoning for our echo-system. Even after this monitor is completely dead and becomes obsolete, what we do is use its components for repairing other electronic items!!

crt monitor

Recently one of the old CRT monitor in our office started causing problem. As you can see in the image above, there is a red tint and if you pat the monitor from back this problem is gone for sometime. If your monitor is also having the same problem then you can solve it easily, just read on and know all about how to repair this fault in monitor yourself. If you are minor then please DO NOT TRY this as there is a risk of fatal electric shock in this work.

open crt monitor

If you have some experience with these kind of work then you can do it easily. We start with opening the back cover of the monitor. For ease of opening, what I do is put it upside down and then open the screws. There should be 5 or more screws to open, just look closely. Once you take out all the screws, back cover easily comes out.
Note: Before you touch anything inside, take a thick insulated wire and connect it to the ground (-ve) wire inside monitor circuit and touch the other end of this wire to the HT cable connected to picture tube arising from FBT. This will discharge any current which my be there.

Now do as dictated the in the image above to take out the PCB from the picture tube. The grounding wires (black ones) may stop you from taking out the PCB which are attached to the protective casing of the PCB. Detach these wires and then gently pull out the PCB from the picture tube. Now you will see many wires connected to this PCB using male/female socket of several pins. It’s best to put a mark on them using a marker pen so that later on you don’t get confused with them. After taking out the PCB, remove the protective casing carefully using a soldering iron and then it should look something like this:

If your car hasn’t come with insurance pre-setup, it’s better to consider car auto insurance as soon as you can. It gives you a sense of security & safety and adds more value to your car in a way similar to what a fraud insurance does to a business. You can get insurance quote by online services offered by different insurance companies and can also make car insurance comparison before selecting the one that suits you.

OLPC to cost more

September 15th, 2007 by

olpc

OLPC (One Laptop per Child) will cost more than suggested $100 price since the program started. The hike in price is due to increase in raw materials costs and currency fluctuation. According to CNN reports, it’s expected to cost $188 per piece. Any further increase in price (even if it’s small) will definitely cause problem to this program as then people will prefer to buy a used laptop (with much better configuration) than OLPC.
