Choosing the right PSU

June 14th, 2007 by Mohd. Hashim Khan

Power Supply Unit or PSU is a very crucial part of your computer, you can call the heart of your computer providing blood (read power) to all the components. Many PC builders in order to reduce cost use cheap unbranded PSU’s which later causes bigger problem like hardware failure etc. So here are some points to remember while purchasing a PSU for your computer.

1. Look for a branded model. Its not necesary that insanely priced brands will be best for you. You can very well relay on well priced cheaper models from brands like Corsair, Coolermaster, Antec, fsp group, etc.

2. When you have chosen some of them and want to find best one, how about weighing them? Yes its true that heavier the PSU’s, better it will be. Well built PSU’s have more components, heavier heatsink and large capacitors making it little heavy but very reliable too.

3. Ok so you sorted out the heaviest one, what next? look at its exhaust fan and intake fan (intake fan may or may not be there, as it depends on model to model
but if its there, its better),its diameter should be as big as possible since huge fan will need less RPM to throw hot air out thereby reducing the noice caused by it. Smaller ones sound like a jet engine and even don’t work well despite of their high speed. A relatively slow but bigger fan will perform better.

4. You must have seen lots of unused wires inside your computer emerging from PSU causing lots of trouble in servicing and working as a barrier in smooth air flow inside cabinet. To reduce this wire clutter now some brands use modular connectors so that you can remove those power cables which are not in use. This is a very good feature as more cables can be connected when needed so you never fall short of them.

5. What about wattage? For normal PC a 350W is more than enough, however if you have recently added a heavy graphic card and a fatter hard disk then you need a 500W monster. The thumb rule here is, the more the number of devices connected to motherboard, the higer wattage you need.

Liquid Camera Lens

June 12th, 2007 by Mohd. Hashim Khan

liquid lens

German research team has designed the first liquid camera lens which has no moving parts for switching between two levels of magnification. Samsung has used this technology in some of their camera cell phone models due to its small size factor and low cost of manufacturing. However professional cameras which had bulky zoom lens will get more benefit from this technology as altering the focus of these liquid lens gives the same zoom function which requires several traditional lenses to achieve. Since glass lens used today have fixed focus length, so for the zoom function two or more lenses coupled with some mechanical parts to move lens for adjustment which surely made the device bulky.

A visit at SBI ATM

sbi atm machine

I have always wondered why these SBI ATM are so slow to work, the touch screen is sluggish, menu and buttons have time lag as you must have noticed when you enter the amount, it appears late on screen and what to say whole machine is lazy. Today in the evening I went to ATM and the gatekeeper was doing something behind the machine and some people were waiting. I asked what happened, is it working? Quick came the reply “yes ofcource but you have to wait for five minutes as there was a power failure and machine will take some time to boot. I kept waiting and screen flashed and I couldn’t believe at what I saw, it was a Pentium 3 ! And the way it counted onboard memory reminded me the days of 386. Now I came to the secret behind its slow working and I was laughing when I saw it loading Windows Xp ! It took almost 3 minutes showing that Xp screen and then again some 5 – 6 minutes loading some software, at last it came alive. Its so costly machine and can’t they throw in a Pentium 4 processor and some more RAM to give it a life? I know these machines don’t require much processing power as needed in fully functional computer but then why it’s slow? I have seen some other bank’s ATM using Windows98, hope it must be little faster.

Publish it from Desktop

windows live writer

If you are a blogger don’t you feel sometime too lazy to login to your blog admin panel, then type the post and publish articles? Yes I was, and due to my habit of typos and slow typing I use to first write in WordPad, then copy paste it in my blog. This was still a long process and those html codes were looking dirty in WordPad.
Microsoft Live Writer allows blogger to post from desktop! It’s very simple, all you need to install this small software and then what you get is a full WYSIWYG editor to write post, include all the media content and then post it directly to your blog without any delay from the software itself. Sweet! Windows Live Writer supports almost all major blog service like wordpress, blogger, typepad etc.
The benefit I see by using this software is that now I can write post offline and also from anywhere and any computer, also using media content in blog post is easier now. This software is still in Beta phase and it requires .net framework to be installed.
