Using Ubuntu can be fatal for Laptops

A bug has been found in Ubuntu operating system which shortens the life span of your laptops hard disk drive. Desktop users using Ubuntu need not worry about this bug. The reason behind it is that Ubuntu uses the default hard disk setting and because of that switching to battery power causes the drive to complete an entire load cycle in a minute. Since most of the laptop hard disks are rated at 600,000 cycles per lifetime, you may need to replace new hard disk almost every year! This is a lot of price to pay for using a free operating system. However a fix to this issue has been posted at launchpad forum
