There are two main people behind making of website, one who code the functions and one who make the outer shell of the website which we actually see. People who design the outer shell are designers who are master in some of the graphic design software’s. If you let programmer to do the design task then website comes out functionally well but looks ugly and if designer does all the work then functionally the website look deficient. Here are some important design concepts for different type of websites:
1. Business website: Target audiences are senior people who may have not a strong computer background. Website should not be too funky (unless your business is about design and artworks) and functionally simple. It should have fonts that comes pre installed in OS and not any fancy one. If fancy text is needed then it should be an image and not real text. Hire a creative agency for promotional purpose that can create buzz about your product and catch people attention.
2. School / College website: Once again this has to be as simple as possible with minimum use of graphics. There should be a column on home page that shows all latest news and it should be visible without any scrolling. If your website is of huge university with huge number of students and you are also suppose to display result or have online registration then website should be optimized for low server use and should be hosted on a dedicated server.
3. Personal website: I cannot tell about how these sites should look but two things are important. First is it should reflect the personality of the person whose website it is and second it should not have anything that will make that person ashamed of his website in future. It should have a blog, it doesn’t matter if you blog frequently or not but it should have a blog. It makes content adding very easy.
At the end of development of every website, it should be tested by few volunteers and then should get (if needed) the changes according to their feedback. This is very important because I have come across many big brands website that have nonsense user interface and some universities websites that goes down as soon as the results are announced or registration is open.
